What is PMM?

PMM is the first and only web-tracking system designed specifically for Pubcasters.

Public Media Metrics is an web measurement service developed specifically for web services in Public Radio, Public Television and related program and project sites.
Our system is powered by Google Analytics (GA), the world-wide standard for tracking small to mid-sized websites.  (Very large sites often use very expensive custom applications.)  GA is already the defacto standard within public broadcasting, in use at more than two-thirds of public radio/TV sites.

PMM provides insight no single GA account can provide.

PMM builds on the GA platform to create a classic web 2.0 application. That is, PMM maginifies the usefulness Google Analytics for a specific community of users, namely public broadcasters.  PMM software monitors and analyzes the GA data at more than a hundred client sites, and we use this shared data to generate trends, benchmarks, and best practice recommendations.

PMM answers the question: "How're we doing?"

You know what your site is doing---but how does this compare to other, similar online properties? Are you average, excellent or trailing the pack? PMM compares your site's performance to results at other comparable stations and project sites based on format, market size and production capacity.

PMM is a platform for shared research.

In our first two years, we initiated seven collective research projects on topics, including

  • Use of online companion material for Ken Burns's series "The War";
  • Use of election and politics stories within public radio/TV sites during the 2008 Presidential campaign,
  • The use of email for driving traffic to pubcasting websites,
  • Deployment and use of playlists within music sites,
  • Effective on-air promotional tactics to drive traffic from on-air to online.

PMM provides a network of public broadcasting new media professionals.

PMM puts you in touch with the people who run sites and services just like yours. When you have a question, we can help you get an answer. When you want to talk strategy, we can set you up with a conference call among other people who are building and maintaining sites just like yours.
